Description

Read the thread pitch on a Heavy Hex stud or nut, inch or metric, with two clear cards and a size chart. No swing-out leaves to jam into the threads.

A metal thread checker needs room to sit in the threads. On a stud behind a flange, on a heat exchanger with the insulation half off, or inside a nut, it often won't fit. A clear card doesn't have to. Hold it against the threads and look through it, or take a pencil rubbing and read that instead.

What's in the package

  • Clear Card Thread Checker, Inch Heavy Hex (threads per inch), in a vinyl sleeve
  • Clear Card Thread Checker, Metric Heavy Hex (thread pitch in mm), in a vinyl sleeve
  • Heavy Hex size and pitch chart, inch and metric
  • Instruction card

Two ways to read the pitch

First, peel off the protective film. Each card ships with a thin plastic film on it. Take it off and the threads show through clearly.

1. Hold the card against the threads. Slide it along until one row of arrows lines up with every thread crest. The number at the end of that row is the pitch.

2. Take a pencil rubbing. Lay a piece of paper over the threads and rub lightly with a pencil. Put the card over the rubbing and match it to a row of arrows. If you can get a pencil and a scrap of paper on the threads, you can get the pitch.

The inch card reads 4, 4.5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18 threads per inch.

The chart ties it together

Once you have the pitch, the chart lines it up with the stud and nut size. The inch side covers studs from 5/8" to 4" and nuts from 1-1/16" to 6-1/8", with the 8 UN, coarse (UNC) and fine (UNF) threads per inch for each. That tells you which wrench or socket to send for before you climb back down.

Want the nut gauge too?

The Metal HexSizer and Clear Card Thread Checker Set adds a metal HexSizer that sizes the nut from one flat, with thread profiles engraved on the back. Pick Heavy Hex Inch or Heavy Hex Metric.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see the threads through the card?

The protective film is still on. Peel it off.

Does it work on threads inside a nut?

Yes. Take a pencil rubbing if you can reach the threads, or hold the card against them and look through it.

Who uses these?

Millwrights, bolting technicians and pipefitters working on flanges, heat exchangers and turbines in plants, refineries and on wind turbines.
